Chapman named Albany Good Citizen

Albany’s Jaci Chapman andMoran’sTerraThompson have received the Good Citizen award from the Lee’sLegionChapterofthe DaughtersoftheAmerican Revolution.

The DAR Good Citizens Award and Scholarship Contest is intended to encourage and reward the qualities of good citizenship.

The award recognizes high school seniors who possess the qualities of dependability, service, leadership, and patriotism in their homes, schools, and communities. Students are selected by their teachersandpeersbecause they demonstrate these qualities to an outstanding degree.

Chapman received her pin from the Lee’s Legion Chapter on Wednesday, Feb. 7.

“It will help out with my college applications to have that on there,” Chapman said of being selected. “It’s a really nice honor.”

Recipients must fill out an application listing their accomplishments and extracurricular activities as well as write an essay to be judged for a scholarship contest.

“The essay was about the characteristics and responsibilities of a good citizen,” Chapman said. “They asked what are the civic responsibilities of a good citizen and why are these duties, activities, and behaviors important toshapingtheAmericayou hope to experience. I had to answer that question for the scholarship contest.”

Chapman, who plans to pursue a college degree in a medical field, has been involved in numerous extracurricular activities. In tennis, she has been part of three doubles teams to win district championships and was a state qualifier in girls doubles last year, although she was unable to participate because of illness.

She was a regional alternate in One Act Play as a junior.

Chapmanhasservedas an officer for student council, her class, and National Honor Society.

Thompson missed last week’s ceremony because of illness and received her award Wednesday, Feb. 14 in Moran. Her background information will appear next week.
