A back-to-school bash including a swimming party for local fifth through 12th grade students, extended shopping hours at many downtown stores, and food and fellowship provided by area churches has been organized for the evening of Thursday, Aug. 9, by members of the Albany Chamber of Commerce.

“We wanted to give parents an opportunity to go shopping after work, and the kids a chance to reunite with each other before school starts,” said Chamber office manager Mary Beth Jones. “It will also give churches a chance to let all of the kids know what they are offering this year.”

Participating downtown merchants will stay open until 7:00 p.m. next Thursday.

The Chamber rented the swimming pool from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Aug. 9, and has invited all local fifth through 12th grade students to come and swim for no charge.

“We are hoping that parents of older children will take advantage of a chance to drop them off at the pool, and then head downtown to do some back-to-school shopping,” said Jones. “Local churches plan to provide food and fellowship from 8:00 to 9:00 p.m. at the City Park after the pool party.”
