Cast, crew of Albany one-act play win honors

Albany High’s one-act play cast and crew presented their production of “Oz” at district competition in Haskell last week, and while failing to advance to the bi-district round, several members of the cast and crew did receive recognition.

Junior Landon Balliew was named to the All-Star Cast for the district for his role as the Lion. Senior Robyn Trail received honorable mention All-Star Cast for her role as Beth.

Senior Kolt Koemel was picked as All-Star Technical Crew, while the rest of the backstage group was picked as the All-Star Crew, including Laithe Leech, Zane Waggoner, Ashley Sanchez, and Austin Sanchez.

Albany reprised last year’s presentation of ‘Oz’ with a few cast changes.

“The kids did an amazing job with no mistakes,” director Chanel Hayner said. “They really couldn’t have done any better.”

The director noted that the lights and sound were perfect as well.

“I am especially proud of the seniors who worked so hard and provided the leadership needed,” she said. “I am really going to miss this bunch that is graduating.”

The three plays advancing to the bi-district round included Haskell, Stamford, and Hawley. Anson is serving as the alternate.

Hayner said that Cisco had an outstanding play that would have advanced, but they were disqualified forexceedingthetimelimit by just a couple of seconds.

“Oz” was written by Don Zolidis as a take-off on the original “The Wizard of Oz.”

The cast included Robyn Trail – Beth, Jaci Chapman – Glinda the Good Witch, Ayana Molina – The Witch, Adam Hill – Props/The Wizard of Oz, Gabby Lopez – Aunt Carol, Brayden Watson – Uncle Jason, Madi Parrott – The Guide/Jill, Brody Brown – Hair/Quix, Chip Chambers– Wardrobe/ Quax, Cade Fairchild – Munchkin Mayor/Guard of Oz, Landon Balliew – the Lion, Avery Everitt – the Scarecrow, and Tyler Chapman – the Tin Man.

The crew included Kolt Koemel – lights, Zane Waggoner – crew, Ashley Sanchez – sound, Laithe Leech – crew, Austin Sanchez – sound/lights aide.

Schools in District 102A include Albany, Anson, Cisco, Hamlin, Haskell, Hawley and Stamford.
