Call for water quenched

The Albany Volunteer Fire Department’s water/Gatorade drive on the evening of Monday, July 16, went very well, according to fire chief Kyle Tischler.

“It was a tremendous success,” Tischler said. “It was like Christmas in July for the fire department. Many people in Albany came by and took great care of us by dropping off drinks and monetary donations and one couple even came over from Abilene to bring us water.”

The total donations are expected to add up to around three pallets of water and 50-60 packs of sports drinks and Smart Water, according to Tischler.

“We have not got an accurate count yet, but we received enough that we will be able to share with our nearby fire departments,” the chief said. “These drinks are imperative for our firefighters when working fires or vehicle accidents. The bunker gear we wear protects us well from the dangers of our jobs, but it also keeps all of our body heat in.”

The water/Gatorade drive was organized to help enable the volunteer firefighters to stay properly hydrated, especially when they are called out in the extreme conditions typically associated with summertime in Texas.

“With the heat and the physical activities, we get dehydrated very quickly,” Tischler said. “So what these citizens have done is much bigger than they may realize. We appreciate the community supporting us like this.”
