Shackelford County 4-H will hold its annual kickoff party to start the coming year at 6:00 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 18 at Webb Park.

Shackelford County extension agent Kelsey Bell said 4-Hers will be introduced to a variety of projects in which to participate for the coming year.

“We’ll have hot dogs, and all the project leaders will be there to answer questions about the programs,” Bell said. “Some of them will do a little activity or have information to hand out.”

Bell said the first official club meeting is still being planned, but a busy September is already in the works.

“The first full week of October (Oct. 2-8) is National 4-H Week,” Bell said. “That’s probably when we’ll have the first club meeting and officer elections.”

Bell said 14 projects are being offered this year.

“My hope is that shooting sports will expand greatly this year,” she said. “We have coaches in place for all the different disciplines and will offer a monthly outdoor education meeting for all the shooting sports kids or any others who are interested.”

The first outdoor education meeting will be Tuesday, Sept. 20 at The Feed Store. The time is to be announced.

While the kickoff party will serve as a welcome to start the year, Bell said some projects will already be underway.

“Sewing will have its first meeting at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 11,” she said.

The sewing project will be led by Jo Hise and Heather Nitschke.

Weigh-in for commercial steer projects for the Shackelford County Youth and Livestock Show will be Sunday, Sept. 25. Time and location are to be announced.

“The commercial steer class has been approved, but the board has to decide on the rules for that,” Bell said. “The directors will meet Tuesday, Sept. 6.”

Bell said significant interest was shown last week at an informational meeting to discuss adding the class to the county show.

The order deadline for heifer tags is Friday, Sept. 9.

The food and gardening projects will combine efforts for a canning workshop on Tuesday, Sept. 27.

“We’re going to can some of our vegetables from the garden,” Bell said.

Wrapping up the month will be a food and nutrition kickoff on Thursday, Sept. 29.

“That will be for the kids who want to compete at the food show,” Bell said. “It will be an informational meeting as to how those contests work and when they are. Kristie Smith is leading that this year.”
