Boychoir concert set June 16

Local residents are invited to a free concert by the Houston Boychoir next Thursday, June 16 at the Aztec Theater.

The special performance is hosted by Dr. Richard Stasney and the Stasney Cook Ranch starting at 7:30 p.m.

The stop in Albany is part of the 60-year-old group’s summer tour entitled “On the Road Again.”

According to artistic director Carole Nelson, the program will include a variety of music including classical, spiritual, and even some Texas songs.

The group is making stops in Bastrop, Arlington, Carlsbad, New Mexico, Albany, and Abilene.

The choir will present a performance at Hardin-Simmons University in the Woodward Dellis Recital Hall at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday to end the tour.

The Houston Boychoir has a mission to build men of character through music. Founded in 1962, it is the only program of its kind to reach out to the population of the inner city and the outlying regions, melding the unique aspects of both.

Auditions are held throughout the year for all boys with unchanged voices, ages eight to 14, who demonstrate a willingness to learn, vocal talent, and musical aptitude, according to the organization’s website.

The organization is a non-profit supported by community and Houston Boychoir family members and alumni. Scholarships subsidize much of the education, and no boy is turned away because of an inability to pay for tuition.
