Session 1 of the Big Country Beef Cattle Improvement Series will be held at the Trail Ranch in Shackelford County on Tuesday, June 25, and interested parties need to sign up by June 20, according to extension agent Michaela Bradford.

Tour highlights are expected to include discussions on prescribed burning, mechanical, chemical and IPT brush control, livestock and wildlife water development, food plots, grazing practices, and landowner incentive programs.

Participants should RSVP by contacting Bradford at 325-762-9435 by June 20.

Registration will take place at 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday, June 25 at the Shackelford County Courthouse. Lunch is included in the $10 registration fee. Participants are eligible for two pesticide application CEUs.

Four-wheel drive vehicles are recommended.

“Here is your chance to hear from industry specialists, agency partners, and local landowners as we highlight management practices to enhance rangelands in order to optimize wildlife and livestock production,” said Bradford.

Trail Ranch

The Trail Ranch won the Lone Star Land Steward Regional award from Texas Parks and Wildlife in April of 2018.

“Recognizing that habitat degradation didn’t occur overnight, and neither does restoration, Justin and Tamara Trail have taken a step-by-step approach to managing their Shackelford County ranch,” said the TPWD news release. “One of the fundamental objectives for the Trail Ranch is to manage the land and the plant community to benefit from moisture when it occurs and to sustain a healthy habitat even during drought conditions.”

According to the TPWD, the Trails have made strides in improving the land for wildlife, particularly bobwhite quail, turkey, and deer through brush control, native plant restoration, and other best management practices.
