Awards handed out at 4-H banquet Aug. 14

Nearly 150 awards for project completion were presented to Shackelford County 4-H members Sunday, Aug. 14, during the club’s banquet at the Whitney Theatre.
“We had probably a dozen project areas,” Shackelford County extension agent Kelsey Bell said. “Those ranged from two to 20 kids getting to completion.”
Riley Reames, Faith and Grace Fry, Madailein Beard, and Johnnie Hise were among club members to receive several awards.
“A lot of our seniors completed multiple projects,” Bell said. “Five did record books and got something extra.”
Bell said the banquet drew more than 100 people including club members, adult leaders, and parents.
“The banquet went great,” she said. “Alicia Burton cooked the food and did an amazing job. The Whitney Theatre was very gracious to let us have it there at no cost, and we’re very grateful for that.”
In addition to the awards presentation, club officers spoke during the program.
“All of the junior and senior officers gave speeches,” Bell said. “Johnnie Hise was our keynote speaker, and she did an excellent job.
New Project
Bell announced that approval has been granted for the Shackelford County Youth and Livestock Show to add a commercial steer class for the 2023 show.
Contestants will feed a pen of three steers to be exhibited as a single entry.
“Our first weigh-in will be Sept. 25,” Bell said.
Bell said rules for the project are still being worked out. A parent meeting will be held in early September.
“We have a couple of families here who have done that project at major shows,” Bell said. “We’ll have those families at the meeting to answer questions.”
