Albany High School alumna and 2020 valedictorian, Addison Asher, was recently notified that she had received the Arlis Parkhurst Endowed Scholarship for her participation in UIL academic events at the state level.

The scholarship awarded Asher totals $1,000 a year – $500 per semester – and is renewable up to three years.

In 2017, the scholarship was established to specifically help students from small schools in West Texas.

Asher, an incoming freshman at Texas A&M University, moved into her dorm room earlier this week at College Station and said the scholarship will help cover campus expenses such as housing.

The Texas Interscholastic League Foundation, to which Asher applied for the scholarship, was only awarded to students in 1A, 2A, and 3A schools who competed at the state level for UIL academic events.

During her high school career, Asher qualified in three journalism categories, news writing, feature writing, and headlines to compete at the state academic UIL contest, making her eligible for the college scholarship.

She was hoping to advance again her senior year, but the coronavirus pandemic put an end to that goal.

Asher is majoring in biomedical science at A&M and has plans to attend veterinarian school after graduation, specializing in small animal surgery.
