Shackelford County elected officials took the first steps toward filling the now vacant county extension agent’s position during a commissioners meeting on Monday morning, May 24.

Kloey Painter, who was assigned to Shackelford County less than two years ago, is moving out of state with her family.

The commissioners authorized county judge Robert Skelton to send a letter to Texas A&M AgriLife formally requesting that the process of taking applicants get underway.

Shackelford County contributes to the extension agent’s salary and travel budget, although a majority of the department’s expenses are handled through A&M AgriLife.

Grounds Clean-up

Skelton thanked the commissioners and their hands for their work on the Courthouse lawn on May 20.

He also acknowledged the help from Chris Beard and Albany High School ag students during the day.

The shrubs and cactus along the sidewalk on the west side were trimmed due to overgrowth as well as damage done in the February freeze.

Several limbs and trees on other parts of the square were also cut back.

Search & Recovery

Sheriff Ed Miller reported on the search and recovery effort last week’s after a missing Cisco man’s vehicle was found on a county ranch.

“It’s unfortunate that it turned out the way it did, but a lot of people did good work that day,” said Miller, who added that in addition to area law enforcement agencies, there were many volunteers involved in the search.

In addition to his own staff, the sheriff mentioned help from the constable and police departments, ranch employees and other cowboys, DPS, Jacey Shack, Prairie Star, and members of both the city and county fire departments.

Miller encouraged all citizens to call in any unusual events or vehicles.
