Albany ‘A’ to replace helmet run-through
Albany athletes will soon be running through a new -giant “A”, with members of the Athletic Booster Club currently working to raise a total of $5,400 for the new inflatable.
A football helmet that has been used for Albany Lion games since 2012 has “sprung a leak” and the Boosters decided a few weeks ago that it was not practical to try to repair it.
The newly designed “A” will sport Albany’s custom Lion logo and will be 25 feet tall, according to Logan Neve, who is helping with the fundraising efforts.
“The great thing about this piece is that, unlike the helmet, it can be used for all sports or AISD activities, not just football,” said Neve. “We are looking forward to seeing it at all kinds of events.”
He explained that the tunnel part of the two-piece inflatable will continue to be used, despite the fact that it was purchased in 2008 and is four years older than the helmet.
“The tunnel is in excellent condition and can still be attached to the new Albany A,” said Neve.
The “A” has already been ordered, with half of the total purchase amount put down in order to start production. The balance must be paid before shipment.
Delivery date is set for Oct. 4, the week before the first district football game.
As of press time on Tuesday, about $2,200 had been raised to help pay for the piece.
Donations can be left at either local bank or the school, designated for Albany Athletic Booster Club Tunnel, or given to a Booster Club member.
Club officer Stephen Kayga expressed the organization’s appreciation for community support.
“Because you assist our youth, each goal will be accomplished no matter how great,” said Kayga. “We will meet our goal and then the next and then your organization’s next – because we are Albany!”
