For the second year in a row, Albany has finished in the top 10 schools in the Class 2A UIL Lone Star Cup standings.

The Lone Star Cup is awarded annually to six high schools, one in each of the six UIL classifications. Standings are based on schools’ team performances in district and state championships in 29 extracurricular activities. The winning school in each classification receives the UIL Lone Star Cup trophy and a $1,000 scholarship. The award is sponsored by Texas Farm Bureau Insurance.

Albany tied Tolar for 10th place in the Class 2A standings with 44 points, the same total it earned last year when it finished in a four-way tie for ninth place.

Activities used in the scoring are team tennis, cross country, marching band, military marching band, volleyball, Robotics BEST, football, congress, spirit, swimming and diving, wrestling, mariachi, film, basketball, Robotics FIRST, soccer, academics, One-Act Play, theatrical design, track and field, golf, tennis, softball, and baseball. Not all activities are available in Class 2A.

The biggest chunk of Albany’s scoring came in football with the Lions receiving 18 points for winning the Class 2A Division II state championship. Baseball was next with 10 points after reaching the fourth round of the playoffs.

Boys golf, which finished third at the state tournament, earned six points, followed by boys basketball with four points. The Lady Lions volleyball, basketball and softball teams each earned two points.

Mason finished first for the second year in a row, scoring 78 points, followed by Shiner with 67 and New Home with 59. Albany had the third-highest finish among schools playing Division II football behind New Home and seventh-place Windthorst.

A total of 213 schools scored points in the Class 2A standings.
