The Albany Chest is moving steadily toward its fundraising goal of $47,000.

As of Monday, Nov. 7, $13,678 had been raised, more than doubling the total of the week before.

The Albany High School Student Council contributed $1,702.62, the most it has ever raised, through its  Trick or Treat for Change campaign.

The Albany Chest helps meet the needs of two dozen local organizations. Applicants for funds range from youth sports leagues to senior citizens groups.

Here is a look at some of the applicants.

Albany Volunteer

Fire Department

Serving Albany since 1884, the department is seeking $4,728.12 for the purchase of new radios.

The department needs to modernize its radio communication to keep up with the ever-changing technological advances in today’s society, according to its application. The petition states that if granted the funds, Albany VFD and the emergency services department within the city will benefit from higher quality radio communication.

The improvement of radios will allow members of the department to better communicate with one another as well as the Shackelford County VFD, EMS, sheriff’s office, and City of Albany Police Department.

“In return, this will benefit the community of Albany by making an efficient effort while responding to an emergency scene,” states the application.

Albany Flag Football

Albany Flag Football was organized to allow children in elementary school to experience the game of football and create relationships with classmates.

The league is requesting $1,500 to help with operations.

“It is the hope of the organization that all kids, boy or girl, no matter what stage of life, get the opportunity to play,” organizer Zach Maberry said. “The organization also hopes to continue to help families that may be struggling financially to afford the opportunity for their child to play.”

Along with providing financial assistance for registration fees, the organization has expenses related to equipment and facilities maintenance.
