The Albany Lions and Lady Lions wrapped up another stellar year with a top-10 finish in the University Interscholastic League’s Lone Star Cup standings.

Albany tied for ninth in the Class 2A standings with 44 points, sharing the spot with Centerville, Lovelady, and Timpson.

“I look at that as being a well-rounded school district, just being able to show multiple things that a small district like us can provide,” Albany ISD superintendent Jonathan Scott said. “This is a great example of the hard work put in by the students, teachers, and coaches who are part of these programs.”

The UIL Lone Star Cup is awarded annually to six high schools, one in each of the six UIL classifications, based on their team, not individual, performances in district and state championships. The winning schools in each classification receive the UIL Lone Star Cup trophy and a $1,000 scholarship. Texas Farm Bureau Insurance sponsors the award.

Schools can earn points in 29 academic and athletic activities – team tennis, boys and girls cross country, marching band, military marching band, volleyball, Robotics BEST, football, congress, spirit, boys and girls swimming and diving, wrestling, mariachi, film, basketball, Robotics FIRST, soccer, academics, One-Act Play, theatrical design, boys and girls track and field, boys and girls golf, boys and girls tennis, softball, and baseball. Not all activities are available in Class 2A.

Mason won the Class 2A Texas Cup with 86 points, winning state titles in One-Act Play, girls golf and three tennis draws.

Albany received 12 points for reaching the state semifinals in football, 10 for reaching the regional tournament in volleyball, 10 for reaching the regional finals in baseball, six for advancing to the third round of the softball playoffs, four for reaching the second round in boys basketball and two for qualifying for state in boys golf.

“I’m very proud of what we accomplished in another successful year,” Scott said.

A total of 204 schools scored points in the Class 2A standings.
