AHS play rehearsals underway

Rehearsalshavestarted at Albany High School for one act play competition, which will be presented at the district contest on Wednesday, March 6 in Haskell.

DirectorChanelHayner said that the cast decided to again use the play “Oz” which they performed last yearandwerepickedasthe district’s alternate with fourth place.

“The kids wanted to do the same play this year because theyhadsomuchfun with it last year,” Hayner said. “We are changing some of the scenes this time that were not part of the play last year.”

“Oz”waswrittenbyDon Zolidis and is a takeoff on the original “The Wizard of Oz.”

The director said that there are about 12 parts that have been cast.

“We have some of the cast members back from last year, but we have several new people as well stepping into new roles,” she said.

The group is meeting two to three times per week.

A public performance is planned for Monday, March 4.

The main character of the play, Beth, is reeling from her sister’s death and suddenly finds herself journeying through a world resembling the film version of “The Wizard of Oz.” In this case, though, the yellow brick road has been sold to foreign investors after a financial meltdown in Oz. Beth encounters the Scarecrow, CowardlyLion, andtheTin Maneachwithmoreissues than in the original story line – a classic gone awry.
