Rehearsals have started for Albany High School’s one act play, which will be presented at the district contest on Wednesday, March 8 in Haskell.

Director Chanel Hayner said that the play “Oz” will be presented locally as well; however, a date has not been set yet for that performance.

Tryouts for the comedy were held during the last two weeks for the cast of 12.

“Oz” was written by Don Zolidis as a take-off on the original “The Wizard of Oz.”

The main character, Beth, is reeling from her sister’s death and suddenly finds herself journeying through a world resembling the film version of “The Wizard of Oz.” Although in this case, the yellow brick road has been sold to foreign investors after a financial meltdown in Oz. She encounters the Scarecrow, Cowardly Lion, and the Tin Man each with more issues than in the original story line – a classic gone awry.

The cast includes Robyn Trail – Beth, Jaci Chapman – Mother/Glinda the Good Witch, Ann Davis – Aunt Carol/The Witch, Adam Hill – Uncle Jason/The Wizard of Oz, Chey’Anne Weaver – The Guide/Jill, Ayana Molina – Hair/Quix, Leddie Leech – Wardrobe/Quax, Melissa Olivarez – Props, Cade Fairchild – Munchkin Mayor/Guard, Landon Balliew – the Lion, Avery Everitt – the Scarecrow, and Tyler Chapman – the Tin Man.

The crew includes Presley Green, Madi Parrott, Kolt Koemel, Zane Waggoner, and Chloe Daugherty.

Cast alternates are Sid Sanchez, Marie Hufschmidt, Kaisley Bartee, and Chloé Anderson.
