The public is invited to a local performance of “Oz” on Monday, March 6 at the high school auditorium, but be careful about following the yellow brick road to view the play.

The curtain will go up at 6:30 p.m. for a free public performance of the high school’s one act play in preparation for the UIL District OAP competition on Wednesday, March 8 in Haskell.

The Albany cast and crew will pack up prompts, sets, and costumes for a dress rehearsal Tuesday in Haskell, returning on Wednesday for a 10:30 a.m. competition performance. Albany will be the first play of the day.

“We are inviting the community to come support these kids on Monday,” director Chanel Hayner said. “They have worked so hard this year, so we would love to see everyone come watch on Monday.”

“Oz” was written by Don Zolidis as a take-off on the original “The Wizard of Oz.”

“It is a very funny play, and this group of kids is having so much fun getting it ready for competition,” Hayner said. “Rehearsals have been going great, and they will be ready to perform.”

The main character, Beth, is reeling from her sister’s death and suddenly finds herself journeying through a world resembling the film version of “The Wizard of Oz.” Although in this case, the yellow brick road has been sold to foreign investors after a financial meltdown in Oz. She encounters the Scarecrow, Cowardly Lion, and the Tin Man each with more issues than in the original story line – a classic gone awry.

The cast includes Robyn Trail – Beth, Jaci Chapman – Mother/Glinda the Good Witch, Ann Davis – Aunt Carol/The Witch, Adam Hill – Uncle Jason/The Wizard of Oz, Marie Hufschmidt – The Guide/Jill, Ayana Molina – Hair/Quix, Leddie Leech – Wardrobe/Quax, Kaisley Bartee – Props, Cade Fairchild – Munchkin Mayor/Guard, Landon Balliew – the Lion, Avery Everitt – the Scarecrow, and Tyler Chapman – the Tin Man. Cast alternates are Sid Sanchez and Chloé Anderson.

The crew includes Presley Green, Madi Parrott, Kolt Koemel, Zane Waggoner, and Chloe Daugherty.

The top three plays will advance to the bi-district contest March 21 in Graham. Schools in District 10-2A include Albany, Anson, Cisco, Hamlin, Haskell, Hawley, and Stamford.
