Almost 93 percent of the 2019 tax levy had been collected with the required Jan. 31 postmark deadline, according to chief appraiser Clayton Snyder at the Shackelford County Central Appraisal District (CAD) office, with eligible payments coming in for another week or so at the beginning of February.

Official CAD reports show that 8,754,165 of the $9,444,036, or 92.68 percent, had come in as of Feb. 3, when the latest reports were finalized.

Snyder said that there had been fairly steady walk-in and mail traffic since Feb. 1, with property owners paying a little penalty and interest in addition to their original taxes.

The chief appraiser also reported that CAD personnel recently sent out rendition notices and some of those are beginning to come back, with a cutoff date of April 15, unless taxpayers request a 15-day extension in writing.

Collection Totals

In a report dated Feb. 3, Albany ISD had 92.53 percent of the tax levies collected. Collections of $3,141,684 had already been made toward the total adjusted tax amount of $3,395,417.

The taxes collected for Shackelford County on the same date were 93.94 percent of the total 2019 levy of $3,668,498, with payments received of $3,446,413.

The Shackelford County Hospital District had received payments totaling $1,116,915 on the total adjusted tax levy of $1,191,363, or 93.75 percent.

The City of Albany has collected $507,945 of the $571,666 levy, or 88.84 percent.

Moran ISD levied taxes of $587,063 for 2019. As of Tuesday, they had collected $516,314, equaling 87.92 percent.

The City of Moran, the smallest entity, had collected $24,894 of the $31,027 levied tax, equaling 80.17 percent.

Penalties

Property owners who did not pay their 2019 taxes on time will be charged penalty and interest on an accumulating scale, starting with seven percent of the total amount added on for the month of February.

The penalty amount will go up by two percentage points every month until July, when it will jump three points to 18 percent.

Any taxes not paid by the end of June will be handled by tax attorneys, with another 20 percent added to cover legal fees.

The only exceptions will be those who already applied for and received the quarterly payment option offered to disabled taxpayers or those over the age of 65.

Eligible taxpayers were required to make their first installment by the end of the day on Jan. 31.

Other payment dates are March 31, May 31 and July 31.
