90 classic entries draw large crowd downtown

Thanks in part to perfect spring weather, spectators and vintage car and truck owners came out in droves to downtown Albany last Saturday for the 15th annual Albany Classic Car Show.

Organizer Robert Snyder reported that 90 vehicles were entered in the show, up considerably over the numbers from the last couple of years that were held down by COVID-19 and the weather.

“The number of entries was back up this year, and it included a lot of new people who haven’t been here before,” Snyder said. “There was also a big turnout of  people who wanted to watch the burnout on Friday and then get a look at the cars and trucks on Saturday. The weather was great, and that helped too.”

He said that the show has averaged between 50-60 entries the last few years.

“We were a little overwhelmed at first getting everyone entered and parked, but it turned out really good,” he said. “It would be great if we can stay at somewhere between 80 to 100 entries in the future.”

The show kicked off at 8:00 a.m. and was open to all classics, antiques, hot rods, customs, trucks, and even a couple of motorcycles, each receiving a goodie bag from sponsor Eagle Auto Parts while they lasted.

“I really am appreciative of all the support we received, especially from our financial sponsor, First National Bank, and from Eagle Auto Parts, who has continued to donate goodie bags and door prizes over the years,” Snyder said. “I also had a lot of help from our car show crew who all showed up and helped. Having so many more entries kept us hopping.”

Several food vendors were on site to provide food and drink opportunities.

Snyder thanked the Albany Volunteer Fire Department for helping with the burnout by hosing down the street between participants, as well as being present Saturday with a bounce house for kids.

Snyder said that the local car club held its first hamburger fundraiser on Friday evening at the car museum on Main Street, raising about $350 to help offset expenses of operating the museum.

“This was our first year to have the fundraiser, which did all tright, but we have some ideas on how to improve that for next year,” Snyder said.

A 50/50 fundraiser was held on Saturday among entrants in the show with proceeds going to Albany resident Blaine Niell who lost her home to fire earlier in the year.

“We raised enough to give her $500, but then the person who won the 50/50 contest donated back his 50 percent, and some of the people who won cash prizes also gave their money to her,” he said. “When it was all over, we were able to deposit $1,350 in her account.”
