Fifth grade students from Nancy Smith Elementary School will have a chance to study a wide range of sciences as part of the Camp Grady Spruce Outdoor Education Program.

Students will spend three days and two nights at the camp on Possum Kingdom Lake learning about sciences ranging from geology to biology to astrology.

“Fifth grade science covers all of those subjects,” said Leslie Neve, NSES fifth and sixth grade science teacher. “This camp is all based on the science TEKS that are covered in the STAAR test.”

The program, which will be Nov. 15-17, includes a trip to Devil’s Island.

“The students will discuss what animals are on the island and how they get there,” Neve said. “They’ll talk about what an island is – the rocks, erosion, weathering, definition, the things that formed it.”

Other programs will focus on sciences such as ecology and astrology.

“We’ll talk about the water cycle and the life cycles of animals and plants,” Neve said. “One night, the kids will stargaze and talk about how the earth rotates.”
