5 4-Hers advance to district show

Five Shackelford County 4-H members earned spots at district competition with their entries in the county Food Show, held Sunday, Oct. 23 at Bethel Assembly.
Advancing to the District 7 Food Show will be James Hise in Intermediate Dessert, Maggie Spraberry in Junior Appetizer, Gage Burton in Junior Main Dish, Artie Bell in Junior Side Dish, and Kimberly Howe in Junior Dessert.
“The Food Show went very well,” Shackelford County extension agent Kelsey Bell said. “All three judges (Tamara Trail, Lisa Russell, and Michelle Bellah) said it was incredibly difficult to pick winners. We had two categories we had to revisit again and again because it was so close. All the kids did an amazing job of preparing for this.”
In addition to preparing their dishes and giving a five-minute presentation, participants took a written test and performed a skill related to food and nutrition.
“At county, the kids had to match measuring devices with different measurements in a recipe,” Kelsey Bell said. “For example, they had to measure a quarter teaspoon of cinnamon. They had 25 different things and they had to pick the correct instrument.”
The district Food Show is scheduled for Thursday, Nov. 17 at the Taylor County Expo Center in Abilene.
“The district show will have the same three parts we had at the county show,” Bell said. “The test will be different, and there’ll be a different skill the kids are tested on.”
Going To Court
On Monday, Oct. 24, 4-H officers attended the Shackelford County Commissioners Court meeting.
“The kids learned how an official meeting is run and Connor Smith presented his Bass Brigade material,” Bell said.
Next Meeting
The next regular club meeting has been scheduled for 1:00 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 13 at The Feed Store.
“That will be our Friendsgiving lunch where we’ll have a potluck Thanksgiving meal,” Bell said. “Then we’ll do a lot of community service projects that afternoon.”
