Four junior members of Shackelford County 4-H competed in the District 7 Fashion Show, held Tuesday, March 28 at Llano.

“This contest is very diverse,” Shackelford County extension agent Kelsey Bell said. “There are a lot of different categories, a lot of events you can enter. All four of the juniors placed in multiple events.”

In addition to competing in multiple individual events, the quartet of Kimberly Howe, Emmie Hise, Carly Kreitler, and Artie Bell placed fourth in the Duds to Dazzle contest, which Kelsey Bell likened to the Food Challenge event that is part of the nutrition competition.

Contestants are provided a sewing machine and kit of supplies, then are given an item to refashion and present to judges within an hour.

“This year, the contestants were given old sheets or towels as material,” Kelsey Bell said. “They were given a category. Our girls were given wearable item, which means it had to become a piece of clothing.”

After that, the possibilities were nearly endless.

“It didn’t necessarily have to fit the contestants,” Bell said. “It could be for a baby or a dog, for instance. Our team made a dog costume with their sheet.”

In individual competition, Howe placed first in home decor storyboard design, second with a quilt, and fourth in wearable item storyboard design.

Hise placed second with a tote bag, fourth in construction – natural fiber and fourth in the “other” category with a zipper pouch.

Kreitler earned first place in construction – costume and finished third in three events – tote bag, jewelry, and wearable item storyboard design.

Artie Bell took first place in refashioned item,  wearable item storyboard design, and home design storyboard item as well as fifth in the “other” category with a water bottle holder.

Cleaning up

Club members filled their allotment of bags Friday, March 31, as they picked up trash along a stretch of U.S. Highway 180.

“It was very windy, but we got it done,” Kelsey Bell said. “We had about 20 bags that the highway department gave us, and we filled them all up. We had just one little stretch we didn’t get to.”

April Meeting

The club held its monthly meeting Monday, April 3 at the Youth Center, decorating Easter eggs and preparing food baskets for Vittles by Vehicles.

The club will also assist with the Shackelford County Easter Spring Fling, scheduled for 3:00 p.m. Saturday, April 8 at the Bank Park.

Photo Clinic

On Wednesday, April 5, club members participated in their final photography clinic to prepare submissions for district and state contests.

“The senior level photographers go directly to state, but we can only submit one photo per category,” Bell said. “We’re having a county contest to decide which photo will go in each category. The juniors will have one a little bit later.”

Get Into Gardening

On Monday, April 10, the club will have a gardening session at Tiffany Sanderson’s house.

“Tiffany has some raised beds we’re going to plant.” Bell said.
