Shackelford County 4-H wrapped up a busy April last week with numerous events.

The local club still has events scheduled, culminating with the last meeting of the year on Sunday, May 15.

Shooting Sports

Tanner Howe and Carly Kreitler competed in the Brownwood Shooting Sports Extravaganza on Saturday, April 23 at the 4-H Conference Center.

Howe placed third in Running Target as well as participating in Light Rifle, Junior Prone Smallbore Rifle, and Air Pistol.

Kreitler tied for sixth in  Compound 3D Archery and was also entered in Hunting Medley, Air Pistol, and Air Rifle.

Highway Cleanup

On Sunday, April 24, club members picked up trash along a stretch of U.S. Highway 180.

“We have been working on adopting a stretch of 180 for at least a year now,” Shackelford County extension agent Kelsey Bell said. “It is a long process. Even though it’s not quite finalized, we decided to get a jump start on our efforts for Earth Day.”

Dog Training

On Monday, April 25, club members participated in a dog training clinic conducted by Whitney Hicks at Webb Park.

“Kids brought their pups and went through basic obedience training,” Bell said.

Photo Contest

Several club members have submitted entries for state and district photography contests.

“The senior submissions will go straight to State Roundup to be judged this summer,” Bell said. The junior (third-eighth grade) District 7 photo submissions are currently being judged.

Cake Decorating

On Thursday, April 28, club members participated in a cake decorating clinic taught by Myra Hise at Nancy Smith Elementary School.

District Roundup

On Friday, April 29, Landon Kreitler competed in the District 7 Roundup talent show, placing third with a trumpet solo.

Sewing Clinic

On Sunday, May 1, Johnnie Hise conducted the final sewing clinic of the school year.

“As a 4-H Ambassador, part of Johnnie’s job description is to pass down her knowledge to those coming along behind her,” Bell said. “She has inspired a whole generation of young seamstresses.”

Horse Show

The county horse show is scheduled for 10:00 a.m., Saturday, May 7 at Fikes Arena.

Contestants will compete in Halter Showmanship, performance events such as Stock Horse Pleasure, Horsemanship, and Trail Riding, and speed events such as barrel racing, pole bending, and stakes.

Final Meeting

The last meeting of the school year will be held at 5:00 p.m. Sunday, May 15 at The Feed Store.

“We’re looking toward next year,” Bell said. “We’re going to plan out the awards banquet, which will be at the end of the summer. We’ll look at the bylaws and see if there’s any restructuring we want to do.”
