Shackelford County 4-H is winding down its year with the final meetings scheduled for Sunday, May 21, but summer programs will be starting soon.

The Horse Club and Sewing Club will meet together at 3:00 p.m. at The Feed Store to make tailbags for horses.

That will be followed at 4:00 p.m. by the regular club meeting, during which officer elections will be held for next year.

“That will wrap up our year, but we do have summer activities on the agenda,” Shackelford County extension agent Kelsey Bell said.

The Summer STEAM program will commence on Thursday, June 1.

The STEAM program is open to children who have completed kindergarten and older. Participants must be members of 4-H or its Clover Kids feeder program.

“The cost to join 4-H is $30 at this point of the year,” Bell said. “Once they are a 4-H member, the program itself is free.”

Bell said Clover Kids offers younger children the opportunity to participate in many 4-H activities, but not all.

“There are some programs those kids can’t do, like horse or shooting sports, but STEAM doesn’t have any kind of inherent level of danger associated with it,” she said.
