The Shackelford County 4-H Food Show is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 23 at Bethel Assembly.

Shackelford County extension agent Kelsey Bell said club members may prepare appetizers, main dish, side dish, or desserts.

4-Hers will compete in three separate parts of the contest, Bell said.

“The main part of the contest is preparing the dish at home and presenting it to the judges,” she said. “The kids will have five minutes to give a presentation, and then the judges can ask them questions for five minutes. The kids are expected to know the nutritional content of the dish and how to prevent contamination with bacteria and things like that.”

The contest also includes taking a written test.

“The test will be on basic food knowledge and nutrition,” Bell said, “where certain things fall on My Plate, which is the new version of the Food Pyramid.”

The final component is to perform a skill.

“The kids won’t know what the skill is until the day of the contest,” Bell said. “Last year, the skill was to set a table correctly.”
