4 candidates file for local offices

The filing period for local board elections began last Wednesday, Jan. 15, and as of press time on Tuesday, a total of four candidates had turned in their paperwork for one of the various positions that will be decided on May 2.

Mayor pro temp Susan Montgomery has filed for Albany mayor.

Incumbents Ginny Ivy and Robert Montgomery have reapplied for their respective seats on the Albany school board.

Incumbent Janna Ledbetter has turned in her completed application for the Shackelford County hospital board.

There is not a fee to run for the local offices, but prospective candidates must file by 5:00 p.m. on Feb. 14 to have their names listed on the ballot.

Albany City Council

Lester Galbreath, Susan Montgomery, and James Waters hold the three at large city council seats that are up for election in 2020. Council members serve two-year terms.

The remaining one year of the two-year term for mayor of Albany will also be up for vote this election cycle due to the recent death of mayor Rodney Alexander.

As of Tuesday, Jan. 21, Montgomery had filed for mayor, but no one had yet filed for the council positions, according to administrative assistant Tiffany Nall.

Applications for city council and for the mayors office are available at the Albany City Hall from city secretary Becky Wiloth. Those with questions can call Wiloth at 325-762-3133.

Albany School  Board

Robert Montgomery has filed for re-election to Place 1 on the Albany school board and Ginny Ivy has filed to return to her Place 2 seat, according to administrative secretary Morgan Whitley.

Candidates for the Albany school board must live within the boundaries of the school district and must file for a specific seat. 

The trustees serve for three-year terms and two seats will be determined this election. 

Applications are available at the superintendent’s office at the secondary school campus.

Hospital Board

The Shackelford County Hospital Board seats currently held by Janna Ledbetter, John Ayers, Myra Hise, and Chris Beard are up for vote this year.

The four seats are each for a two-year, at-large position.

Candidates for the hospital board must have their applications signed by 10 registered Shackelford County voters.

According to Regina Whitt at the district office, applicants should obtain at least 12 signatures, in case one or two of the signers are not on the current list of registered voters.

Election information and applications are available from Whitt at the district office at 840 Gregg Street.

Moran City Council

No one had filed for the Moran councilman positions as of press time on Tuesday.

The three at-large seats currently held by Dora Cook Leonard, Tyler George, and Cindy Husky are also up for vote this year. 

The seats on the city council are all for two-year terms.

Applications are available at Moran City Hall.

Moran School Board 

Trustee on the Moran school board serve three-year terms, and the two at-large positions currently held by Gary Roan and James Shelton will be filled this May.

As of Tuesday, no one had filed for the trustee positions, according to administrative assistant Jeannie TenCate.

People must live within the school district’s boundaries to be eligible to serve on the Moran ISD school board.

Packets for the positions are available in the superintendent’s office during school hours.

Ft. Griffin SUD Board

Three of the three-year terms on the local special utilities district board will expire this year.

The positions currently held by John Adams, Robert Montgomery, and Jim Blancq are up for election.
