Dallas artist Colette Copeland was busy this week putting together a multi-faceted installation in the upstairs galleries of the Old Jail Art Center, joining the staff of the local museum as they prepare for this weekend’s opening of three summer exhibitions.

The opening will start with a members’ viewing and dinner reception on Saturday, June 4 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

The OJAC staff hopes to set up for the dinner in the Marshall R. Young Jr. Courtyard, but with rain in the forecast at least on Thursday and Friday of this week, the event may be moved indoors.

In addition to Copeland’s installation, the three exhibits will feature selections from the permanent collection and works on paper from the collections of two families, according to OJAC executive director Patrick Kelly.

“Technicolor Summer” will feature selections from the Old Jail’s permanent collection that “evoke a celebration of sorts through vibrant color, intense energy, and enlarged scale.”

In the ongoing Cell Series of Exhibitions, Copeland’s project, spread over the two upstairs rooms of  the original portion of the Old Jail, is entitled “My Jesse James Adventure.”

It includes video, photographs, a musical score, and an audio narration that chronicle the artist’s fascination with Jesse James, stemming from childhood family lore and tales of her blood kinship to the notorious outlaw.

Works on paper from the Rodney and Stacey Rogers Collection and Carter/Wynne Family Collection make up the third exhibit entitled “Paper Chase.”

Rodney Rogers and Michael Wynne have both been supporting and collecting Texas and other artists for more than 40 years. The OJAC exhibition will focus on 35 works by 22 artists highlighting the diversity and talent in Texas art.
