3 AHS journalists named to all-state staff
By Lynsi Musselman
The University Interscholastic League announced in August that three students from Albany have been named to the 2019-2020 All-State Journalism Staff.
Current seniors Tana Thompson and Hannah Trail, along with AHS graduate and Texas A&M freshman Addison Asher, were recipients of the honor.
AHS journalism sponsor Donnie Lucas said a point system was still used to decide this year’s staff members, but since there was a limited UIL competition season, with only two invitational meets before the school closed due to COVID, it was more diffucult to earn points this year
“Most of our points came from Individual Achievement Awards through IPLC,” Lucas explained. “This year, 2A schools were combined with 3A schools for this contest.”
Despite the more limited opportunities to earn points, Lucas said the three Albany High School girls racked up more than enough to meet the 50-point threshold.
Both Thompson and Trail had twice as many points as needed, while Asher earned three times the necessary number of points.
There were also a few other staff members who were just short of receiving the honor.
“As always, I am very proud of how our students perform, and I’m excited to see them recognized for their efforts,” Lucas said.
Thompson and Trail are the 2020-2021 co-editors for the Lions Roar.
