The 34th annual pig sale that benefits the Shackelford County Youth Livestock Association held Sunday, Sept. 13 set a record on average price, gross sales, and registered buyers, according to organizer Mike Parsons.

Sales totaled $75,900 with an average price of $774.49 per head.

Parsons said 98 pigs were sold with one “no sale.”

“Our consignors brought a strong set, and our volunteers did a super job of accommodating the buyers and consignors,” Parsons reported. “Albany laid out the ‘red carpet’ for our buyers.”

Parson said as the oldest continuous sale held in the state of Texas, the Albany pig sale continues to have strong local support and support from breeders.

“It would be difficult to put on this quality of event without parent volunteers,” said Parsons.“Their tireless efforts should put over $5,000 into the SCYLA.”

Committee heads for the SCYLA pig sale include welcome committee members Robert Snyder and Cody Leech, concession Debra Boyett, office manager Molly Cauble, sales manager Reggy Spencer, and barn superintendent Jearl Boyett

“FFA supervisors Chris Beard and Matthew Hise and Shackelford County Agent Kloey Painter do the heavy lifting to make this event a success,” Parsons said.

He added that the association board led by president Bronco Askew takes on the added responsibility of the sale because of the impact to the SCYLA over the past 34 years.

It is estimated that around $100,000 has been raised for the association and Shackelford County youth over the years.

“What really sets us apart from other sales is the prize money sponsorship from EZ Feed and Supply of Albany and Linder Seeds of Comfort,” Parsons explained. “Peyton Parsons of EZ Feed and Jason Linder of Linders contribute over $2,000 in prize money to the consignors, which gives them an incentive to bring their best swine, and that in turn brings buyers in.”
