Albany News

County voters have the opportunity to cast ballots in three separate elections this Saturday, May 4, with contested races being decided for the Albany Independent School District board of trustees, Albany city council, and Fort Griffin Special Utility District (SUD).

A total of 200 early voters had already been to Albany City Hall by the end of the early voting period at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday to mark their choices in both city and school races.

About 45 showed up for early voting at the SUD office.

Polling Sites, Hours

On Election Day, May 4, in-person voting will be conducted at Albany City Hall from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. for both the city council and AISD elections. City Hall is located at 425 S. 2nd Street in Albany.

The Fort Griffin SUD board election will take place the same day at the SUD office at 1180 CR 109, seven miles north of Albany, also from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Mail-in ballots must be received by election officials, at the address specified on the ballot, before the close of voting, 7:00 p.m. on May 4.

School Board Races

There are three seats being elected for the Albany ISD board of trustees.

Amanda Tabor and incumbent Kelly Head both filed for the Place 5 position, while Joe Tidwell is unopposed for Place 6.

Mike Bean, Dinty Bowman, Clint Chapman, Stephen Kayga, and Kim Neece are all running for Place 7.

According to local policy, “a candidate must receive more votes than any other candidate” to win the seat, so unless there is an actual tie among the top vote-getters for Place 7, there will be no run-off election.

Albany school board members serve three-year terms.

City Council Seats

The four candidates for the two positions available for the Albany city council are Dewey Knight, Ragan Riley, Don Taggart, and incumbent Carolyn Waller.

The seats are elected at-large, meaning that the candidates do not sign up for specific places. The two contenders who get the most votes will be seated on the council starting with the May meeting.

City council positions are for two-year terms.

Incumbent Rodney Alexander is the sole candidate for Albany mayor.

SUD Board

Two three-year terms on Fort Griffin SUD’s seven-member board are expiring this spring with two candidates for each seat.

Incumbent Kenneth Hill of Albany is being challenged by Donald (Don) Stutsman of Moran.

Ben Hale of Throckmorton, also an incumbent, will be on the ballot opposed by former board member Sidney C. (Sid) Collinsworth of Breckenridge.

Anyone who lives within the SUD’s legal boundaries is eligible to vote. The district reaches from Hwy. 283 south of Throckmorton to the west side of Hubbard Lake, all of Shackelford County, and an area south of Moran.

However, residents who live inside the boundaries of Albany and Throckmorton city limits cannot vote.
