2 students to compete at state UIL
By Melinda L. Lucas
Two Albany High School students will be among the best in the state next week in the UIL Academic Meet at the University of Texas in Austin.
Junior Sidney Russell and sophomore Avery Everitt will both compete in the feature writing contest at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, May 17.
The awards ceremony is at 7:00 p.m. that night.
Russell won second in feature writing at the Region II Academic Meet last month, while Everitt placed third.
The top three places in each event at the regional contest advance to the state meet.
Journalism sponsor Donnie Lucas and teacher Jennifer Everitt will accompany the pair.
Albany sent two seniors last year in journalism events, both receiving medals for placing in the top six.
“Both girls have been working on practice prompts,” Lucas said. “They are both good writers and certainly have a good chance at a state medal.”
Both students are on the staff of the school newspaper, The Lions Roar.
The top three places from each of the four regions in the state advance to compete at the state level.
