ResourceCare’s 24th year of Summer Day Camp is nearing the midpoint of its two-week run.

Day Camp is free to all registered children from age 3 and potty trained to sixth grade.

ResourceCare’s Ragan Riley said numbers are up this year with 168 students registered. About 30 high school workers and 12 volunteers are working this year’s camp.

“Our staff is about a quarter of what we usually have, but they are all great kids who are doing a fantastic job leading the elementary kids,” Riley said.

Riley said special attention is being paid to the heat with triple-digit temperatures forecast throughout the run of the camp.

“Friendship Baptist Church has graciously donated their gym for us to use during the week so the kids can do different activities out of the heat,” she said.

Activities have included games such as kickball, dodgeball, and capture the flag as well as board games like Hungry Hungry Hippos.

“We also do movie time at the Youth Center as well as arts and crafts,” Riley said. “Teri Lucas with the Boy Scouts has generously allowed us to use the Scout house, and that’s where we have popcorn and lots of board games like Connect Four and Jenga.”

The camp has also included a number of dress-up themes.

“Everyday we do dress up if the kids want to,” Riley said.

Themes for the first week included Fiesta Day and Christmas in July. Thursday, July 14 (today), is Day Camp Throwback with Freaky Friday to wrap up the first week.

Themes for next week will be ’Merica Monday, Tie Dye Tuesday, War of the Colors (Wednesday), and Albany Spirit Day (Thursday.

Also next week, campers will attend special Vacation Bible School events at different local churches. First Baptist Church will host Monday, Church of Christ on Tuesday, Friendship Baptist on Wednesday, and Bethel Assembly on Thursday.
