Albany High School senior Tana Thompson qualified for regional in five events and junior Luke Ivy will advance in four events after they and other local students competed in the UIL District 10-2A Academic Spring Meet held at Stamford High School on Wednesday, March 24.

Twelve other AHS competitors will also advance to the regional level.

“I am very pleased and proud of our students,” said AHS UIL coordinator Rick Davis. “We have a total of 14 students who advanced individually or as part of a team and/or placed in multiple contests.”

Other AHS students who qualified for the regional meet in individual events include Sidney Russell, Sidney Bartee, and Sarah Cotter.

Individuals who place first, second, or third qualify for the regional UIL academic meet, as do all four members of first place teams.

In addition, four Albany academic teams took home first place honors, which means that all team members go on to regional competition.

Fourth place winners are alternates, but they have the opportunity to compete if one of the top winners has a conflict and is unable to participate.

Regional alternates are Hannah Trail, Taren Farmer, Ty Everitt, and Ashley Richards.

District Standings

Albany High School placed second overall behind Haskell.

Local students took first place spots in ReadyWriting, Spelling and Vocabulary, Science, Mathematics, News Writing, and Editorial Writing, as well as top teams in Journalism, Current Issues, Number Sense, Science, and Mathematics.

Journalism Team

AHS journalism participants were named as the top team at the district meet, but unlike other first place teams, the journalism team as a whole doesn’t advance because members are in several separate events.

However, they do earn team points for their school.

Regional Meet

The Region 2 academic meet will be held at Grayson College in Denison on April 16-17.

“The meet is organized differently this time,” said Davis. “We will have all of the writing contests on Friday, April 16, with the test contests on Saturday, April 17.”

Davis said that students who place first through third in Denison will qualify for the next level of competition, along with those on first place teams.

Members of the first place teams have a chance to place individually at regional, even if they didn’t land in the top spots at the district level, added Davis.
