Dozens of local scholarships were presented to members of the Albany High School Class of 2023 during commencement exercises held last Friday, May 26.

There were well over 100 separate awards for the class of 32, with some scholarships split among more than one recipient, amounting to almost $130,000.

The awards were given by just under 50 local churches, clubs, organizations, foundations and individuals.

The oldest of the awards is the Robert Nail Scholarship given by the Ex-Students Association for the first time in 1967 for a total of $100.

The Henry Martin Rockwell Endowment Fund administers several scholarships, the largest in  honor of John and Nell Carter. This year, there were six $2,500 scholarships from that fund alone, totaling $15,000.

The Albany ISD Education Foundation, now in its 14th year, gave 22 scholarships in the amount of $1,000 for each student per year.

Several new awards were added to the list this year, including one to be given up to eight semesters in memory of former Albany educator and superintendent Buddy R. Dulin and his wife Elizabeth.

Also given was the “The Next Man” scholarship in memory of Boone Askew, who was a member of this class of seniors until he and his family moved from Albany several years ago, and the Lisa Warne Glasmann Memorial Scholarship, honoring an Albany High School graduate.
