Zack Waggoner named ‘Firefighter of the Year’
Volunteer Zack Waggoner was named ‘Firefighter of the Year’ during the Albany Volunteer Fire Department’s annual awards presentation and Christmas party.
Fire Chief Joel Viertel explained that to be named ‘Firefighter of the Year,’ a firefighter typically needs to demonstrate a consistent record of dedicated service within their department and community, including acts of heroism, outstanding leadership, dedication to training, significant community involvement, and a positive reputation within the fire service, often going above and beyond expected duties.
“Zack Waggoner in one year has earned the respect of his peer firefighters as well as his officers,” Viertel said. “He often shows up just to check the department and make sure things are up to standards, sweeping the floors, cleaning out trucks or washing trucks.”
Viertel added that he will show up to assist anyone who is working on the trucks and equipment.
“Anytime a call is made for assistance with a task at the station, outside of the normal meeting times, if Zack is not working, he shows up to help,” the chief continued. “He’s one of the most reliable for 2 a.m. and 3 a.m. calls. I can count on Zack to show up.”
During the past year, Waggoner has gone to multiple fire training schools, as well as training as an EMT, completing his classes with exceptional grades.
“He is now moving on to qualify and begin a career as a full-time, paid firefighter, all the while, staying on our department and helping any chance he’s available,” Viertel said. “Zack is the kind of guy that we are looking for. Any department will be fortunate to have him working with them.”
