Albany senior citizens are still waiting for the green light to meet in their new activity center.

Shackelford County Senior Citizen Activity Center board president Tracy Sullivan said because of coronavirus fears, there is no opening date set for the new activity center located at 5 South Jacobs Street.

Eventually, the center will be open Monday through Fridays from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Sullivan said the center will provide a gathering place for senior citizens to  meet for fellowship and drink coffee.

“The center will be the Feed Store for big kids,” Sullivan said.

Once the facility is up and running, entertainment and activities will be planned for seniors as well as educational opportunities.

“We hope to have in-service programs from organizations like American Heart Association and American Cancer Society,” Sullivan added.

She said there will be a kitchenette for potluck meals, but the building is still in need of cabinets and a stove, and donations to pay for these items.

“The center will be self-sustaining, so donations are tax deductible,” Sullivan said.

The senior citizen center board secretary Mary Beth Jones said annual fundraisers will be held to fund the cost of the building that was purchased by the city. Donations will also be needed to pay utilities and general upkeep of the center.

Donations are being accepted for the center  at City Hall or First National Bank Albany. Contributors are asked to reference the Shackelford County Senior Citizen Activity Center.
