Local pool to close Sunday

Residents wanting to squeeze in one last swim at the Albany city swimming pool have until Sunday, Aug. 2, before the pool is closed for the season.

Pool manager Jennifer Bowman said the pool’s closing coordinates with Albany’s two-a-day sports schedule.

The pool will lose several lifeguards who participate in sports, as well as college age staff members who will be leaving to go back to school even before the last day.

“We have had a great group of lifeguards this year,” Bowman said.

The pool staff has navigated a pool season that started with a later start than usual, an unexpected two-day closure, and closing in August a week earlier than in other years.

“We took all staff temps and every person entering the pool each day,” Bowman said. “Extra measures to clean and sanitize the rest rooms, railings, pool equipment, and chairs were taken seriously by the staff. When we closed for two days, the whole pool area was completely bleached and sanitized.”

Due to restrictions as a result of -COVID-19, pool attendance was only allowed at half capacity.

Bowman explained that daily attendance was lower than previous years, except during Resource Care’s Day Camp when the pool hit the full numbers of their half capacity limit.

Private party bookings for the pool were higher than usual though.

“With the pool closing on Sunday, Aug. 2, we will also stop taking pool party reservations after this date,” Bowman said. “We will not have the lifeguards to staff for the parties.”

The pool hours for the remainder of the season will be Thursday through Saturday 12:00 to 5:30 p.m., and Sunday 2:00 to 5:30 p.m.

Entry to the pool is $2.50 per person, and children three and under are free.

The pool is located at Webb Park at 900 N. Railroad Street.
