Junior high FCCLA team wins state title

By Melinda L. Lucas

Three parliamentary procedure teams and two individuals competed at the FCCLA State Leadership Conference held in Dallas last week, with the Level 1 (eighth grade) team taking the top spot in their division and bringing home a gold medal.

In addition, two Albany High School video teams will advance directly to the national competition after it was announced last week that they are in the top 20 in nation.

A ninth grade parliamentary procedure team placed fourth at the state level in the Level 2 category.

Parliamentary

Procedure

Members of the state championship parliamentary procedure team are Albany eighth grade students Trevor Bellah, Hattie Fikes, Avery Gleitz, Keeley Britting, Blake Britting, Haiden Neil, Kynlee Milligan, and Hailey Gleitz (president).

While the junior high team qualified to advance to the National Leadership Conference, Albany’s Level 1 or junior high team competitors do not typically make the trip to the national conference. The district pays the registration fees for the national conference, but chapter members fundraise for the remaining expenses.

Freshman parliamentary procedure team placed fourth at state in Level 2. Charli Trail, Charlee Patterson, Carsyn Clegg, Jakobi Roberson, Aiden Vickers, Colter Edgar, Kamryn Graham, and Finlee Brown (president) made up that team.

Also competing at state was another Level 2 parliamentary procedure team: president Hattie Braly, Braeten Street, Connor Smith, Jack Nail, Wesley Gleitz, Adrian Wren, and Zayne Lefevre.

In the parliamentary procedure contest, team members take a 20-question test, select two items of new business to incorporate into their meeting, and conduct a 15-20 minute meeting using parliamentary procedure and Robert’s Rules of Order.

In other state competition, Averie Burns and Ann Davis entered a Level 3 Chapter in Review Portfolio, but did not place.

Video Projects

Two Albany FCCLA teams submitted Level 3 video projects earlier this year, with both qualifying for nationals in the same category.

Videos are submitted from across the country, according to FCCLA sponsor Jennifer Marshall, but only the top 20 are selected to present at the National Leadership Conference, which will be July 6-9 in Orlando, Florida. Both local teams qualified in the same category.

A team consisting of Tristan Howe, Mimi Ivy, Madison Parrott, and Woods Peterson submitted a Level 3 Instructional Video about how to help a peer “kick the habit” of vaping, a problem among teens.

“Their video highlights the importance of not being a passive bystander when a friend engages in harmful behavior like vaping,” Marshall said. “They demonstrate confronting a friend with care, share helpful information, and offering support in a helpful and constructive way.

Another Level 3 team, Chip Chambers, Huffman Heatly, and Slade Windham, qualified with a video about selecting a career path for life after high school.

“This video explains how to discover a career that aligns with your interests, skills and values,” Marshall said. “They specifically highlight vocational training and address the misconception that a four-year college degree is required for a successful career.”

Both videos are posted for the public to view on the FCCLA webpage, which can be accessed on the Albany ISD website.

At the national leadership conference, the participants will present their video to the judges who will view it and then engage in a question-and-answer session.

Still Waiting

At press time, Marshall was still waiting for the results of other contests.

Ann Davis and Jaxson Street both took the Child Development FCSA (Family & Consumer Sciences Assessment), which tests basic concepts of child development, parenting and family dynamics, child health and safety, child guidance and behavior, and child development theories and research.

“We know that Ann and Jaxson earned medals, but we don’t know exactly how they did,” Marshall said on Tuesday.

This event does not advance to nationals.
