Funding coming in for stock show

Contributions are needed for the Shackelford County Youth Livestock show, with the annual show set to be held over a three-day period Jan. 31-Feb. 2, less than one month away.

Donations of $12,600 were deposited in the bank as of Wednesday morning, according to Molly Cauble. A bare minimum of $18,000 to $20,000 is required to fund the show.

Donations to the association are used for ribbons, belt buckles, show supplies, premium monies, and other expenses associated with hosting the annual event.

Local 4-H and FFA exhibitors work with their projects, choosing an animal to purchase, feeding and watering the animal, validating, entering, grooming, and showing the project.

Youths entering cattle, swine, goats or lambs should have already had their animals validated and their entries turned in.

Students or parents who need to look over the rules for the different shows, including the local one, can get copies from Albany High vocational agriculture teacher Chris Beard or County Extension Agent Michaela Bradford.

Fundraising Efforts

Letters have gone out to past and prospective supporters of the stock show program in an effort to raise funds for the annual event, with many already responding.

“We depend on the county residents to support this show through donations and bidding at the auction,” association president Bronco Askew said. “It isn’t too early to write a check for a donation, and some donors have already planned their year-end donations for tax purposes.”

Organizers are expecting well over 100 youths to be involved in the local stock show.

Several fundraisers are conducted during the year to help bring in money, this year including a pig sale in the fall.

Contributions may be mailed to the Shackelford County Youth and Livestock Show at PO Box 2439, Albany, Texas.

All checks are tax deductible and should be made payable to the Shackelford County Youth and Livestock Show.

Other preparations are also underway, including a livestock show barn cleanup day, scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 19 starting at 8:00 a.m., according to Beard.

Beard asks exhibitors and their parents to bring brooms, rakes, shovels, and hoes at that time to help clean up and prepare the grounds.
