Fort Griffin to host Winter Encampment, Dutch Oven Cookoff on February 20-21

Fort Griffin State Historic Site will host its fifth annual Winter Encampment and Dutch Oven Cookoff on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 20-21, offering a glimpse into 19th-century life through immersive, hands-on experiences.

The event kicks off Friday at 8 a.m., running until 4:30 p.m., with the public invited to observe period-correct cooking demonstrations. Attendees will witness authentic techniques used during the mountain man era through the Indian Wars period. Approximately 25 encampments will be set up, featuring settlers, military personnel, and even livestock.

“We have people coming from as far away as Austin to participate,” said Sharon Baird, the vice president of the Fort Griffin Living History Association, which organizes the event alongside the State Historic Site. “It’s always a hit, especially with the live cannon fire and small arms demonstrations.”

Saturday’s activities run from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and include a period-correct camp contest, where participants recreate living conditions from the 1800s to the 1870s. In addition to continued cooking demonstrations, visitors can observe 19th century horseback riding and related demonstrations.

The Winter Encampment has grown steadily over the years, and organizers plan to continue hosting it during the same weekend annually. “We’re proud of how this event brings history to life,” Baird said.
