Due to COVID-19 and other health concerns, the Albany Lions Club fundraiser “Flags Across Albany” is on hold for Flag Day and the upcoming patriotic holidays.

However, volunteers with the Chamber of Commerce are stepping up in the interim and providing American flags in the downtown area.

“Flags Across Albany” is  a project the Lions Club organized several years ago to honor American heritage and military heroes who served this country, as well as to help raise funds for the organization.

For an annual contribution of $25 per flag, -Lions Club members would place flags in front of Albany homes or businesses.

Historically, the flags were put up on Memorial Day, Flag Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Veterans Day, and Presidents Day.

Albany Lions Club secretary and treasurer Janna Ledbetter said this week that because the Lions Club is still not meeting in person, members decided  that the flag project would have to be put on hold at least for awhile.

Flag Day is annually held on June 14 and cele- brates the anniversary of the American Flag being adopted by the Continental Congress on June 14, 1777.
