Filing opens for local elections

Filing opened last Wednesday, Jan. 15 for the local May 3 elections, with several incumbents and one newcomer signing up as of Tuesday’s press deadline.
Candidates have until Friday, Feb. 14 to file for the local elections, each of which could be cancelled if there are not opposed races.
Albany ISD
Board of Trustees
Teagan Brown has filed for the Albany ISD’s board of trustees, putting his name in for the Place 7 seat currently held by Kim Fuentes, who does not plan to run for reelection.
Also expiring this year are the Place 5 and 6 seats held by Matt Bellah and Joe Tidwell. Both signed their paperwork last week to be included on the May ballot.
Applications to file for the election are available at the superintendent’s office in person at 501 E. S. 1st Street, by emailing Lynsi Musselman at lmusselman@albany.esc14.net, or by faxing 325-762-3876.
Albany City Council
Albany mayor Susan Montgomery, along with city council incumbent Lynsi Musselman, stopped by City Hall on Tuesday to file for reelection.
Don Taggart is the other incumbent. As of press time on Tuesday, he had not yet filed.
Applications are available at Albany City Hall.
The candidates receiving the most votes will win the positions in the at-large election for the council positions, while the mayoral seat is voted on separately.

At press time on Tuesday, there were no filings for the other four entities.
Hospital Board
The Shackelford County Hospital District’s board has three two-year terms expiring this spring including Jo Ann Estridge, Mike Folsom, and Maggie Viertel.
Michelle Alexander, who ran for a full term last spring after being appointed, submitted her resignation this week, and it is believed that the one-year unexpired term will also be for those who are filing.

Hospital board candidates must have their application petitions signed by 10 registered Shackelford County voters in order to file.
“We usually recommend getting extra signatures in case someone isn’t a currently registered voter,” Whitt said.
Moran City Council
The Moran city council will fill two at-large positions for two-year terms on the council this spring, as well as the mayor’s seat.
Current council members whose terms are expiring are Christal Herrell and Tyler Kinman The mayor is Tyler George.

Moran ISD
Board of Trustees
Two three-year terms on the Moran ISD board are ending this spring, subject to re-election, although one of those is currently vacant.
Incumbents include Alice Branham and Sam Snyder.
Packets to file for a place on the ballot are available in the school superintendent’s office during regular school hours.
Fort Griffin SUD
Board of Trustees
Two of the three-year terms on the local special utilities district board will expire this year.
The positions currently held by Mike Bartock and Sid Collinsworth are up for election.
