FFA, 4-H close out busy stock show stretch

Albany FFA and Shackelford County 4-H are in the final stretch of the winter stock show season with several appearing at both the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo and Rodeo Austin with three locals making sales.

In Wave 1 of the barrow show at Houston, Crew Spencer placed third with a spot and made the sale. Creed Spencer exhibited a Poland China.

In Wave 2 of barrows, Shackelford County 4-H member Luke Smith placed sixth with a cross and made the sale. Connor Smith also showed a cross. FFA members exhibiting barrows were Paige Price with a Duroc, Ryan Turner with a Yorkshire, Tatum Grady with a Chester and Colter Edgar with a cross.

In Wave 2 of steers, Hattie Braly placed fifth with a Red Angus and Kenzie Neve also showed a Red Angus. The two also showed steers at Rodeo Austin with Braly making the sale after a fourth-place finish. Neve showed in All Other Crosses.

Also at Rodeo Austin, Tara Cauble and Charlee Patterson each showed two wether doe goats. Cauble, August Early, Lyla Early and Willa Early each showed wether goats. Willa Early also showed a Dorper in the wether lambs show.

In the barrow show at Austin, Creed Spencer placed eighth with a Berkshire, Turner made the top 14 with a Duroc, and Paige Price showed a cross.

Madalein Beard will exhibit her heifers this week at Austin.

Graford CDE Results

The Albany FFA horse judging team of J’Cee Keen, Judson Rogers and Madalein Beard placed 10th out of 24 teams recently at the Graford CDE. The livestock judging team of Alli McDaniel, Charlee Patterson, Kamryn Graham and Turner placed 17th out of 26 teams.

“Several of the students haven’t competed in these contests before,” Albany FFA advisor Chris Beard said. “A lot of our veteran judges were at stock shows. These students did a great job preparing and competing.”

On Tuesday, March 25, Albany FFA teams competed at Cisco. Students are competing Thursday, March 27 (today) at Tarleton State.

4-H Notes

Shackelford County 4-H members volunteered their time and labor Monday, March 24, working to beautify the courthouse flower beds. The workday was part of a project being led by Riley Reames and Kerrigan Howard.

“The majority of the club members were invited,” Shackelford County extension agent Kelsey Bell said. The girls felt like it would be best for fifth grade and up.”

On Tuesday, three Sewing Club members competed at the District 7 Fashion Show at Rowena.

The final Shotgun session of the month is set for Friday, March 24.
