Closet Angels honors senior volunteers with scholarships
By Melinda L. Lucas
Two Albany High School seniors were awarded scholarships from Closet Angels last weekend in a brief announcement ceremony Sunday after church at the ministry’s building.
Chosen as recipients because of their service over the past few years were Carisa Barrera and Riley Mae Reames.
“We are proud to announced these recipients of the Closet Angels Servants Heart Award Scholarships,” Closet Angels coordinator Lori Reames said. “They both earned $500 scholarships through hard work and dedication to the cause of helping needy families in Shackelford County.”
To earn a scholarship, volunteers must show a desire to help others, be team players, show up consistently with energy and drive, and show initiative to find what needs to be done. Sharing creative ideas and solutions is also a plus, according to the coordinator.
Carisa is the daughter of Carlos and Lisa Barrera.
“On top of her job, school and pitching for the Albany Lady Lions, Carisa carved out time to help us create a Teen Girls’ Room at Closet Angels,” Lori Reames said. “She came up with ideas, along with Clara Miller, to create a space where teen girls felt comfortable shopping, and picking out any clothes they felt teens would love. Carisa made countless trips up and down the stairs and endured sorting in the hot sea container last summer to ensure teen shoppers had the best choices available. We are so grateful for Carisa and her can-do attitude.”
Riley Mae, daughter of Ace and Lori Reames, literally grew up helping at Closet Angels and The Local Exchange, formerly Neighbors In Need.
“When we started Closet Angels back in September of 2010, Riley Mae was almost four years old,” her mother said. “She would help the ladies at the front desk, tell me what had been there too long and what to re-donate.”
Once she began to drive, she would haul bags of donations, haul off trash, and pick up or deliver items from The Local Exchange. She helped in the women’s room over the years as needed, and was willing to do whatever was asked of her.
“We wish both of these ladies success in their future endeavors,” Lori said. “Having young volunteers is crucial for Closet Angels to know what is in style and what is not, and we value their opinions and energy.”
High school students who want or need community service hours are encouraged to reach out to Lori Reames at 325-721-8620 to be placed on the list to volunteer.
Although the ministry closes the month of July, it is a busy month, according to the director, as volunteers prepare for the Back To School Bash.
“So now is the best time to start,” Reames said.
