Cabaret a hit for Albany Mainstreet Playhouse
By Melinda L. Lucas
Albany Mainstreet Playhouse’s first ever “Cabaret” was a big success last weekend, with only one night planned initially, then a second performance added when the first sold out quickly.
The event was held Friday and Saturday evenings at the Whitney Theatre.
“We had advertised for a maximum of 48 because it was a dinner and show with limited space, but we ended up with 56 on Friday and 48 on Saturday,” said Lorna Ayers, AMP director. “Both were very responsive crowds, and we couldn’t have been more pleased.”
Proceeds from the “Cabaret” will benefit the Albany Mainstreet Playhouse, and Ayers stated that with the success of last weekend’s performances, AMP may plan to have a similar event every year.
“It was such a hit,” said Ayers. “There was no program, and no one knew what to expect. It was immersive entertainment, and the audience was part of the action.”
Ayers wrote this year’s original script, but she said that the songs and script would change for the next performance.
“The Whitney was a great venue, and Betsy (Parsons) was so gracious about letting us rehearse and perform there,” Ayers said.
Several people in the audience sent reviews, and Ayers commented that they were all complimentary. Excerpts from a few include the following:
—“We could really have been in Abilene, DFW, or even New York, and not had any better evening of quality entertainment.”
—“There are not enough stars to describe how amazing the Cabaret show was!!”
—“Another outstanding performance presented by the Albany Mainstreet Playhouse! There truly is never a dull moment.”
Next Show Dates
AMP is currently in rehearsals for the next show, Rumors, which will be performed at the Aztec Theater on Feb. 28 and March 1 at 7:30 p.m., with a matinee at 2:30 on March 2.
Tickets can be purchased on AMP’s website at www.albanyplayhouse.com/events.
One of Neil Simon’s most beloved plays, Rumors has both “accusations and hilarity” when the deputy New York mayor is shot at an uptown dinner party.
AMP celebrated its 25th year in 2024, and Rumors is the fourth production of the 2024-2025 season.
