Bennett to compete at state academic meet in news writing

After earning top honors at regionals, Albany sophomore Kylee Bennett will make her state debut at the UIL Academic Meet in Austin next week.

Bennett won the gold medal in news writing at the Region II Academic Meet last month to qualify. The top three places in each event at the regional contest advance to the state meet.

She will compete Monday morning, May 19, on the campus of the University of Texas. Results will be announced at the UIL awards ceremony at 7 p.m. that evening.

“She has been practicing for state the last two weeks,” journalism sponsor Donnie Lucas said. “She is probably a little nervous, but I think she will surprise herself just like she did with first place at district and regional. She is already one of the top 12 in the state among Class 2A.”

Bennett is a staff writer for The Lions Roar, Albany High School’s student newspaper.

High school teacher Jennifer Marshall will accompany Lucas and Bennett to the event.
