Beard earns fourth-place finish at Houston

By Sam Waller

Albany FFA’s Madalein Beard placed fourth over the weekend in the Junior Hereford Heifer at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo.

The result continues a strong winter show season for Beard, who has placed well at several shows with heifers she exhibited at the Shackelford County Livestock Show.

Several Albany FFA and Shackelford County 4-H members are in Houston this week showing hogs.

4-H Notes

After holding a riding session Saturday, March 15, Shackelford County 4-H Horse Club members will have a multi-discipline riding clinic Saturday, March 22.

Archery and horse judging have practice sessions Sunday, March 23. The District 7 Fashion Show will be held Tuesday, March 25 at Rowena. Shotgun practice is scheduled for Friday, March 28.

Deadlines Approaching

Exhibitors who sold animals at the Shackelford County Livestock Show are reminded it’s time to begin writing thank you notes to buyers.

Deadline to have notes finished is April 1. Sellers must send notes before they can receive their checks.

Albany FFA advisor Chris Beard sent out a notice for his students before spring break. FFA members must place their finished notes in stamped, addressed envelopes ready to mail and turn them in to Beard for verification. Beard will mail them.

April 1 is also the deadline for applications for the Shackelford Youth and Livestock Memorial, Monte Lewis and Turner/Williams scholarships. Seniors can pick up an application from Albany Junior/Senior High counselor Cheyenne Case and turned in to her at the counselor’s office. Late applications will not be accepted.

Also by April 1, all outstanding balances due to the stock show, 4-H or FFA must be settled. Additionally, all animals housed at the FFA barn must be removed and all pens cleaned.

Deadlines are also approaching for show tags for the 2025 fall and 2026 spring shows. Orders must be placed by April 9 for steer tags for the spring, heifer tags for the fall and State Fair market lambs and goats (fall and spring). Cattle tags are $25 each with lamb and goat tags $15 each. Orders for State Fair pig tags for fall ($15 each) will be taken until April 30.

The Shackelford Youth and Livestock Association will hold its annual meeting at 6:00 p.m. April 8 at the Ag Building.
