Albany FFA competes at San Angelo, San Antonio shows

Albany FFA students wrapped up their participation at the San Angelo Stock Show and Rodeo last week and now turn their attention to the San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo.
In addition to steers and hogs being exhibited in San Antonio this week, Will LeMay, Jack Nail and Slayton Parsons were entered in roping events in the rodeo and Jake Hale was entered in the ag mechanics contest. Hale has already earned blue ribbons for his hydraulic hay trailer at Fort Worth and San Angelo.
Creed Spencer showed reserve breed champion barrows at both San Angelo and San Antonio. On Wednesday, Feb. 12, he won his Black OPB class at San Angelo and claimed the breed’s reserve title. On Saturday, Feb. 15, Spencer won his class and reserve breed champion in Wave 1 at San Antonio with a Poland, making the sale.
Also at San Antonio, Tara Cauble and Kamryn Graham showed market wether goats Thursday, Feb. 13, with Cauble placing 14th in her class. On Friday, Feb. 14, Madailein Beard placed second with her horned Hereford heifer. On Monday, Feb. 17, Hattie Braly placed seventh with her Maine Anjou steer.
At San Angelo, several students showed hogs Tuesday-Wednesday, Feb. 11-12. On Tuesday, Colter Edgar placed 10th and had another top-20 finish with White Crosses, while Tatum Grady had two top-20 finishes with Dark Crosses. Paige Price also exhibited a Dark Cross.
On Wednesday, Spencer made the sale with a Duroc, which placed third, and placed 11th with Berkshire in addition to his reserve breed champion. Other participants were Ryan Turner with two Yorkshires, Crew Spencer with a Yorkshire and Price with a Duroc.
In the steer show, Kenzie Neve placed sixth in her Other European Breeds class.
Hogs For Sale
Students have butcher hogs for sale. Anyone interested in purchasing one should contact Albany FFA advisor Chris Beard at 325-762-4688.
“We have three or four hogs left at the barn that kids are wanting to sell for somebody to butcher,” Beard said. “People can get in contact with me, we’ll weigh the hogs and the buyers can get a check to the kids.”
Beard said prices are to be determined, but other animals have sold for about $1 per pound.
“That helps the kids get rid of their animals and get some of their money recouped for animal projects next year,” Beard said.
