AISD to honor four retiring educators

Albany Independent School District will host a retirement celebration Tuesday, May 20, from 4 to 5 p.m. at the Nancy Smith Elementary School library, 741 Griffin Road, to honor four longtime educators. The public is invited to attend.
The event will recognize Pam Cope, Rick Davis, Melissa Fields and Piper Tankersley for their decades of service in education and their impact on the Albany ISD community.
Pam Cope has served 25 years in education, contributing to Nancy Smith Elementary in various roles including art, computers and intervention. NSES Principal Jenci Chambers described Cope as “a happy spirit whose presence will no doubt be missed.”
“Her uplifting spirit cannot help but make others smile,” Chambers said. “Kids love her and she loves kids. She takes pride in her work and it shows day in and day out. She is truly gifted in her role.”
Rick Davis, a veteran educator of 35 years, has been a fixture at Albany High School for the last 30 years. Ezra Chambers, principal of Albany Junior/Senior High School, praised Davis for his servant leadership and lasting influence.
“Mr. Davis is a true servant. He is always looking for ways to help students, families or colleagues,” Chambers said. “We are losing a great role model for our young men. Rick Davis is an A+ human. We are wishing him the best in his next venture.”
Melissa Fields, a fourth-grade teacher at NSES, is retiring after 28 years in education. Jenci Chambers highlighted her dedication, high standards and humor.
“Melissa Fields is a gem,” she said. “She works extremely hard at her craft and leaves big shoes to fill. The halls will be empty without her sense of humor guiding us each day.”
Piper Tankersley, who has taught second grade at NSES, concludes a 26-year career. The NSES principal described her as a vital part of the school’s success.
“Piper Tankersley is and has been a breath of fresh air on our campus for many years,” she said. “She is not only great for students, but also a leader among our teachers. She is a dream for administration.”
