AHS student to compete in 3 contests

Albany High School junior Addison Asher is headed to the UIL state academic meet at the University of Texas campus in Austin this weekend, along with sponsors Donnie Lucas and Jenny Scott.

A sendoff is planned Thursday afternoon at 3:00 p.m. as the group passes through the downtown area.

Asher is advancing in three events after taking first in headline writing and third in both news writing and feature writing at the Regional 1-2A meet in Odessa last month.

“Addi has been working on practice prompts and is very excited about competing at state,” said Lucas. “She set a goal to advance to the state meet in at least one event and ended up going in three. I think she will do well.”

Writing events are scheduled throughout the day on Friday.

Feature writing is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. that morning, with news writing at 12:15 p.m. and headline writing at 1:30 p.m.

“Addison is a talented young lady, but the contest is so subjective that you just never know how it will come out,” Albany’s UIL coordinator Rick Davis commented. “I’m very proud of her, and it’s very impressive that she qualified for three events.  That doesn’t happen around here very often.”

The awards ceremony for journalism events is at 6:30 p.m. on Friday evening, with the top six places in each event receiving medals.

“I see enough potential in our students that I’ll be surprised if we don’t take a larger group to state next year,” said Davis.
